2nd Oct. At Neo Chorio. A steppe buzzard and an adult light phase eagle.
4th Oct. At Neo Chorio. Many thousands of Alpine swifts were passing south all day.
6th Oct. At Maleme. A solitary dolphin was lazily swimming by as a single flock of over a thousand alpine swifts flew over very high up but could be clearly heard.
7th Oct. At Neo Chorio. A juvenile lesser spotted eagle was circling with a pair of local resident buzzards and a female kestrel. Pauls fifth grandchild was born today - mum and dad are both well - Paul and his wife very pleased and somewhat distracted from the bird-life. Ed.
8th Oct. At Tavronitis. A flock of 8 corys shearwaters.
10th Oct. At Tavronitis. A teal and a marsh harrier.
11th Oct. At Astratigos. A Juvenile rough legged buzzard; a bonellis eagle; and two pairs of ravens. As we were delivering an update for this website page we saw another bonellis eagle swoop down and take a chicken from the next-door neighbours' garden! We thought it best not to report this event as the
cure might possibly be a shotgun!
At Rapaniana. A single honey buzzard.
On Rodopos peninsula. An adult bonellis eagle; 6 griffon vultures; a dark morph booted eagle, a dark phase eleonoras falcon; a pair of lanner falcons; several wood larks singing; a pair of Ravens; 2 cukoos; and the best of all good views of a juvenile bearded vulture - either a first or second
13th Oct. At Neo Chorio. A juvenile hobby playfully chased the flock of tame pigeons a neigbour keeps. The pigeons were not in the least amused!
15th Oct. At Neo Chorio. A steppe buzzard circling with a pair of local buzzards.
18th Oct. At Neo Chorio. A sub-adult bonellis eagle circling. Heavily moulting it looked very tatty.
21st Oct. At Neo Chorio. A flock of 3 - 4,000 alpine swifts took several hours to pass by very high up. Also a light phase eleonoras falcon and a pair of honey buzzards which circled with a single local buzzard which was calling continously.
22nd Oct. At Neo Chorio. The same bonellis eagle again.
23rd Oct. At Neo Chorio. The bonellis eagle again. It looks as if it is going to over-winter here like one did last year.
24nd Oct. At Kaloudiana. 2 honey buzzards.
At Topolia. A colony of crag martins and 3 perigrine falcons which probably feed on the colony of rock doves living in the cave with the church of Agia Sophia inside it.
At Elos. 3 griffon vultures and a bonellis eagle. At the nest site the juvenile bearded vulture is still about and both adults were displaying well. Hopefully they will be breeding by Christmas. Also a pair of golden eagles displaying; bee eaters; white wagtails; a pair of serins; a
pair of stone curlews feeding on a beach; a pair of Kentish plovers; a female blue rock thrush; and a flock of 30+ starlings. I had hoped I had left the latter behind in England where they are a serious pest on fruit trees.
At Kefali. A steppe buzzard and a beonellis eagle.
At Samadiriana. A single red rumped swallow.
At Norpigia. A pair of grey herons.
25th Oct. At Neo Chorio. The bonellis eagle again.
At Rotunda. A single steppe buzzard.
At Astrikas. A pair of griffon vultures; a pair of ravens; lots of stonechats.
At Deliana. 10+ griffon vultures; several ravens; and many black redstarts.
At Neo Chorio. A single steppe buzzard.
26th Oct. At Tavronitis. A juvenile marsh harrier and 3 great white egrets.
28th Oct. At Neo Chorio. Several large flocks of swifts.
At Tavronitis. A marsh harrier.
On Rodopos peninsula. A lanner falcon; many black redstarts and wood larks; bee eaters; lots of robins; 2 griffon vultures; several winchats; a yellow wagtail and a single isabelline wheatear.
At Ravdoucha. An adult bonellis eagle flying with a juvenile and later a sub-adult; a pair of lanner falcons; a pair of Ravens.
30th Oct. At Chania airport. A single honey buzzard.
At Galatas. A wood pigeon. Worth mentioning as they are very scarce here.
